Amish Friendship Bread. It's a love/hate thing

First of all, the Holiday Party season is in full swing. I love to get dressed up and make the rounds....

We are knee deep in Amish Friendship Bread.... Those of you familiar with this treat know it can quickly consume your life. You begin with a 'starter' given to you by a 'friend' (or someone who just wants to mess with you). You 'feed' the starter for 10 days until it is ready to be made into bread, and of course, new starters. So once you commit to the friendship bread, you are stuck with plastic bags of starter completely taking over your counter. This is more than a recipe - it's a way of thinking. In our hi-tech world almost everything comes prepackaged and designed for instant gratification. So where does a recipe that takes ten days to make fit in? Maybe it's a touch stone to our past - to those days not so very long ago when everything we did took time and where a bread that took 10 days to make was not as extraordinary as it seems today.

If you'd like:

Amish Friendship Bread Starter
This is the Amish Friendship Bread Starter Recipe that you’ll need to make the Amish Friendship Bread (below). It is very important to use plastic or wooden utensils and plastic or glass containers when making this. Do not use metal at all!

Ingredients:

1 pkg. active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees F)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 cup warm milk (110 degrees F)

Directions:

1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water for about 10 minutes. Stir well.

2. In a 2 quart glass or plastic container, combine 1 cup sifted flour and 1 cup sugar. Mix thoroughly or the flour will get lumpy when you add the milk.

3. Slowly stir in warm milk and dissolved yeast mixture. Loosely cover the mixture with a lid or plastic wrap. The mixture will get bubbly. Consider this Day 1 of the cycle, or the day you receive the starter.

For the next 10 days handle starter according to the instructions for Amish Friendship Bread (see below).

Amish Friendship Bread Recipe
Day 1 - receive the starter

Day 2 - stir

Day 3 - stir

Day 4 - stir

Day 5 - Add 1 cup each flour, sugar and milk.

Day 6 - stir

Day 7 - stir

Day 8 - stir

Day 9 - stir

Day 10 - Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Divide into 4 containers, with 1 cup each for three of your friends and 1 cup for your own loaves. Give friends the instructions for Day 1 through Day 10 and the following recipe for baking the bread.

After removing the 3 cups of batter, combine the remaining cup of Amish Friendship Bread starter with the following ingredients in a large bowl:

2/3 cup oil
3 eggs
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 to 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1 1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Using a fork beat by hand until well blended. You can add 1 cup raisins and 1 cup nuts (optional).

Grease two loaf pans with butter, sprinkle with sugar instead of flour.

Bake at 325 degrees F for 45 minutes to 1 hour (individual oven temperatures vary). Cool 10 minutes, remove from pans. Makes two loaves of Amish Friendship Bread.

Every few years I get sucked in by the Amish. After a while, it gets hard to find friends who will take your starters. So when that happens, you just have a huge bake-apalooza, and use all the starters up yourself.

We spent the weekend with my parents and all had fun (and ate way too much!)! No time for Black Friday for me, or even Cyber Monday, so I need to buckle down, and finish my Christmas shopping, before (one of) the best parts of December kicks in: Holiday Party Season. Can't wait to make the rounds!!!

My favorite outfit first:

Flannel, but with a flair! Love it. This shirt is fairly new at J Crew, and worth every penny. I predict it will be marked down though, so if you love it, wait. Flannel is awesome, but not everyone loves it like me!

This next outfit is cute, but the girl in it looks pretty haggard. I am including it so that you know I am an equal opportunity shopper. The skirt is from the Loft. and yes..... there are those darling MacAlister boots again!

And lastly, a shout out to my 2nd favorite store: Banana Republic. Scored this SEQUIN TWEED skirt at 40% off. Yes! Sequins AND tweed! Could a skirt get any better?????

Those shoes are the Pilar shoes that will pop back occasionally in the sale section. If you see them, grab them. But size up a half a size, as they fit a little snug. I usually wear a 6.5, and these are perfect in 7.

Exciting news around the Chic Chauffeur's house..... I am starting a job next week that is my 'dream job'. I will combine my love of all things computer with my very boring accounting and bookkeeping skills. It's a perfect mesh for me, and I can't wait!

I have a couple outfits of the day that are total repeats (sort of). Don't you love re-mixing?? Last year I did Kendi's 30 for 30 challenge (chose 30 items, and could only wear those 30 items for an entire 30 days). It was challenging, but I got so many 'new outfit' ideas!

I look a little tired here, no? Sometimes life gets to you, doesn't it?!? It has been a crazy week... basketball tryouts, charity purse event, volleyball tryouts, 1st basketball practice for my 4th grader, parent teacher conferences.... The list goes on. Today is my 12 year old son's birthday. He and a group of buddies are at a paintball field as we speak (Mr. Chauffeur held down the fort on that one). For his gift, he wants a dirt bike. (Please, no dirt bike horror stories, as we have already agreed to this gift.)

Today we had early morning volleyball tryouts, and then a very cold soccer game. Thank goodness for this next re-mix. So glad you all advised me to go with a smaller size!

That is a cinnamon dolce latte in my hand. Delish. I am a starbucks gold card holder, and will freely admit I have a problem..... Now my oldest daughter is addicted as well. Her fave is the salted caramel mocha with extra whip.

Last but not least, here is a funny story that I know my blog friends will appreciate. Yesterday, my 9 year old daughter (secretly) recorded on my mac a 'makeup video'. She introduced the 'segment' (yes, she actually called it that on the video) and then recorded herself applying makeup (think extreme close up shots) as she narrated what she was doing and why. Usually she was speaking in a stage whisper, because she was using her sister's makeup in the 'segment', and didn't want to get busted. I so wish I did not have internet paranoia, and could share it with you. It is total hilarity. Clearly,the apple does not fall far from the tree.... at least one other member of our family also likes to take photos of herself!

ps. Forgot to mention: My 12 year old's football team won the city championship last week. The team is coached by his dad and older brother. What a perfect day! The team we played and won against almost had us - we were pretty evenly matched. The opposing coach very generously found my husband after the game, and presented him with the 'game ball' - an awesome example of sportsmanship for both teams. It was a fabulous culmination to a dream season.

Many of you know I live in the midwest, and recall the horrible tornado that destroyed much of the town of Joplin, Missouri. Joplin is still rebuilding, and the ones that need help the most returning to 'normal' are the children.

My daughter and I are hosting a fund raiser for St. Mary's School, which was completely destroyed. Classes have resumed, but the kids are making do with the very barest of essentials. A friend of mine from college is a teacher there..... she shared recently that they don't even have four-square balls for recess!

PUMPKIN SPICE LATTES FROM STARBUCKS!

Well, actually the #2 reason, as my birthday is this month.

If you are a DIY-er:

PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE
Ingredients:

1/2 cup water
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons canned pumpkin
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ginger
1/8 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/16 teaspoon nutmeg
Espresso or coffee
Cream or milk
Directions:

In a saucepan, bring water to a boil, reduce heat and add sugar. Stir until it is dissolved. Add in remaining ingredients and continue to heat the mixture for a few minutes until everything has had a chance to combine. Try not to let the mixture come to a boil.
Strain the mixture through a coffee filter.
To make a latte, add 3 tablespoons of the syrup to 2 shots of espresso and steamed milk. You can also add it to coffee, or if you are really adventurous, make a cocktail out of it.

Feels warm and cozy, and is nice and thick. I'm just not sure I would wear it. I am so swayed by public opinion.... it sold out quickly. Can you really go wrong with tweed? This outfit can't decide if it is a Chanel wannabe, or an English Lass, setting off for a ride. There's been a cold snap in the midwest, and I was just trying to stay warm.

Sometimes, you see something on a catalog web site, and you think, 'hmmmmm.... that outfit is awesome, but that gal is 12 feet tall. How would it look on a shrimpy 45 year old housewife???'

The darling model showing off the Foundry pants is a great example. I love army green. I love army green pants. One peek at the Foundry pant, and I was hooked. Wanted them to go on sale so that I could get my inner 1940 housewife turned assembly line worker on. I mean, those pants LOOKED like the rocked, but again, does this thin giant/model look bad in anything?

My review? Turns out they really do rock. Size down, but if you like a looser Katharine Hepburn style, these are your pants. I love them. They are a little high waisted (and in my opinion? incorrectly described on the web site as the city fit. The city fit is a much lower rise than this). They are incredibly long and really, must be rolled up in some way or hemmed, unless you happen to be a WNBA player.

Don't you think I look a little like Rosie the Riveter?

Speaking of the other culteral icon I referenced, my mom adored the late great Katharine. My little sister was actually named after her... She was known for speaking her mind, but my favorite quote attributed to her is 'If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun'. So true! Every now and then you just need to cut loose!

Today, I had a 7:15 am meeting with my youngest daughter's teacher. (We are strategizing ways to help her experience a little more success with her school work.....) Afterwards, I went ahead and met her class for church, as my sweetie also had a speaking part in Mass!

At our church, our Wednesday and Thursday Masses are 'kid' masses. The priest usually tailors his homily to a child's point of view. Wednesday has the school kids grade K-4 in attendance, and Thursday are the 5th -8th graders.

I was RIVETED by Father Tom's homily. He repeatedly used a catch phrase from the Gospel reading, 'Woe to you!' (Jesus was reprimanding the Pharisees and Scribes about their unkind behavior, even though technically they followed the letter of the law regarding what they were 'supposed' to do). He compared that to when a mom says 'Just wait until your dad gets home!'. He reminded the kids that Jesus really wants them to follow his commandments, especially to love one another and to be forgiving of other's mistakes. He pointed to our huge Crucifix and said, love each other just like Jesus loved you. Then he reminded them how Jesus asked for the forgiveness of the soldiers that crucified him. I know this sounds heavy, but in Father Tom's jovial way, it was so kid (and mom) appropriate.

Today, I am going to love my kids just like Jesus loves them. Even when they are misbehaving, I am going to love them. Even when they sass me, or make me feel guilty because I can't do it all.... I am going to love them! Today, I am not going to just satisfy the letter of the law where my parenting is concerned!

Aside from the spiritual, I just like the sound of 'Woe to you!'.... If I were misbehaving? That would stop me in my tracks!!!!!

I love chambray shirts. Since I wore this to work, it actually qualifies as a 'work shirt', just not the dickie brand that my uncle and grandpa used to wear every day while working in the corn fields, or tending their livestock.....

Since I didn't have any cows to milk, I paired my work shirt with a super cute pink lace skirt! I may drink a milk shake or eat some pop-corn, just to get my inner farm girl on!

I know everyone has wondered about the hacking jacket, so I thought I'd give you my review, although at 80 degrees, I did not actually wear this outfit today! Just throwing some info out there, because I am betting that there will be a wait list soon!

Jacket? Fabulous. Feels exactly like the double serge wool skirts. It might be a hair snugger than the schoolboy in fit (I took the same size I wear in that blazer), but in my opinion, that is what gives it the sharper silhouette. The color? Delish. That bright berry is the exact same red of the Astrid Jacket from a few years ago with liberty fabric trim (hmmm. Which I own. And would like to sell, as I do not need two jackets in this same delicious hue. Barely worn and a size 4. $70 shipped. Any takers?) Anyway, back to the Hacking jacket. It is fitted, but I liked it like that. I would say, if you like to wear shirts underneath, and not camis, you may need to consider sizing up. The cami I have on is also on sale: the silk scarf tank in floating rose. It was really a nice tone on tone look, and the cami has the most darling ruffle! Size down in this. I am a 2 or 4 in J Crew blouses, and I took a 2.

Versatility is the name of the game in my closet. Everything that comes in must be wearable a multitude of ways.... I favor the dressy/casual mix, so that makes it easy to change things up in a hurry. Here is a work to play look:

All dressed up in this awesome pink stretch shirt, pencil skirt from the Loft, and my beautiful Pluma necklace (thank you thank you Fabulous Florida Mommy!!!)

Here I am after I switched into jeans, for running the kids around. Notice I kept those fabulous shoes, and how great they look with the jeans? Ladies, a piece of advice: don't save all your pretties for a special occasion. If you bought it, wear it! Get your money out of it! Trust me, most times you will either tire of an item, or the piece will go off-trend before you can wear it out. So go ahead and enjoy what you love!

Origin

There's reason to believe that this phrase derives from the Californian Gold Rush of the mid 19th century. Prospectors who panned for gold supposedly became excited when they saw something glint in the pan, only to have their hopes dashed when it proved not to be gold but a mere 'flash in the pan'. This is an attractive and plausible notion, in part because it ties in with another phrase related to disappointment - 'it didn't pan out'. 'Panning out' can be traced to US prospectors and was used in that context by the early 20th century. For example, Paul Haworth's Trailmakers of the Northwest, 1921:

"The Colonel had told them that a cubic foot of gravel would pan out twenty dollars in gold."

Nevertheless, gold prospecting isn't the origin of 'a flash in the pan'. The phrase did have a literal meaning, i.e. it derives from a real flash in a real pan, but not a prospector's pan. Flintlock muskets used to have small pans to hold charges of gunpowder. An attempt to fire the musket in which the gunpowder flared up without a bullet being fired was a 'flash in the pan'.

I kind of liked it more when I thought it might somehow be related to blingy gold jewelry, instead of a weapon, but I'll still use it!

I finally broke down and picked up the beautiful suede tillys from ebay. Let that be a lesson to me! Better to buy on sale, that miss out on something you adore, and end up paying super-inflated prices on ebay! (again, spend to save! how I love that concept!!)

Final flashy thought? I'm no expert of rappers (massive understatement) but here's a fun quote from a rapper named Kreayshawn (who is someone's daughter. please remember that if you google her...) 'Young rich and flashy.... I be where the cash be...'. For some reason, I have always laughed when I hear that. I always think to myself, how is that a good song? It's not even proper english.... And then I laugh more that I think a song should use good grammar.

Hopefully a few of you are still peeking around, wondering where I have gone......

A small break from blogging was in order after I received a creepy comment on a random post from someone who clearly knew me personally, and even knew some private details of my life. Ahhhhh, anonymity- ya gotta love it I took a bit of time to evaluate, and discovered I love blogland way too much to let someone who won't sign their name ruin it for me. So there!

Here's yesterday's outfit of the day, and bonus! one from today. That scarf has been calling my name at J Crew for some time, and I gave in. So pretty for the season, and the perfect all season weight of wool!

And this darling shirt? It's the boy shirt in stripe crepe de chine (isn't that a cool name?) . Feels great on (nice and silky) but still looks perfect dressed down with a pair of old jeans! I picked up those incredible loafers at Forever 21. For $20? they are perfect. I can't find a link, but they are recent additions to the family, and for as high as they are, and as non-leather as they certainly are, they feel pretty good after a whole day of wear. They come in whole sizes only. I wear a 6.5 normally, but bought the 7's and added toe-pads.

The blazer was handy when I stepped into stores and offices, but the second I came outside I had to lose it. I got just what I asked for: a midwestern heat wave!

We are in the middle of VBS, Swim and Dive team, Volleyball, Soccer tryouts, Baseball, Summer Internships, Football camp, car repairs and doctors appointments. Yikes! That makes me sweaty just reading it. Where are the lazy hazy days of summer???? Hope you are all staying cool!

Look what I found at the Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale..... the sweet pink and blue Sperry Top Siders I have been coveting! (I could not find them on-line... you may have to go into the store to score a deal!)

My love affair with Sperrys began in 1980.... The preppy craze hit my midwestern highschool full force, and I had to have a pair of Sperrys to go with my layered polos and my grosgrain ribbon that I tied around the collar of my button downs! The very first pair I owned was of course the dark brown, but that summer, I got the most beautiful cream suede pair. I have been going strong ever since. I am not much of a 'tennis shoe' wearer. You won't find me in sneakers unless I am at the gym. If I am knocking around? I'm knocking around in my Top Siders! To me, they are like wearing slippers. Now I have my new summer pair, and that sad worn pair of silver ones from last year can get the rest they deserve!

(and guess what? Apparently the craze in on again, because my 8th grade daughter loves them as much as I do!!! How cool is that????)

Who can resist seersucker in the summer? Not I! Here I am, rocking my brand new pencil skirt, ready to go to a Rotary meeting! This is one cute skirt, but is either running small, or I am running big, as I sized up a size to squeeze into it. Click here to take a peek!

Next up is what I changed into after Rotary, as I headed to Hy-Vee to stock up on groceries! Sometimes people have asked me via this blog if I really wear some of these nutty outfits I post as my outfit of the day. The answer is yes. I love this straw hat, and I do get some strange looks parading around as though I think I belong in J Crew's catalog, but I guess I am used to strange looks, what with the 4 nutty children I am also dragging along with me!

The Orange Crush is an Eclair tank from Nordies! It is a silk number, but I think worth it ($68). Love the color, and it felt so nice and slinky! It even has a racer back, to make it a bit sporty, if I decide to lose the jackie cardi and scarf!

It was actually in the 90's today! Some were complaining, but not I! Oh dear sunshine! How I have missed you! Thank you for coming back!!!!

Today I wore the silk henley top in melon spice (which, by the way, is on promo on-line for $59.50, and on sale in-store for $49.99..... strange, eh?). I popped into Nordstrom, feeling all fresh in my darling top, and imagine my surprise when everywhere I looked, there were tops for sale in the EXACT SAME SHADE! I suppose I chose well, as melon spice is apparently very popular right now! At J Crew? That shade is languishing on the shelves.... If you love this top, and love this color? I would be willing to bet you could hold off for another mark down. I am apparently the only person who loved it enough to jump.

So....Here, sporting a chambray schoolboy blazer is my melon spicey-ness!

I've missed a couple of postings, so picture this a few days back, when it was MUCH colder! Cannot even imagine a sweater today!

We are finished with track, and my two who were running did fantastic at the all City Meet. We have several blue ribbons, as well as a rainbow of other ones to show for their efforts! Well done children! It was truly a red-letter weekend, as my oldest daughter turned 13, AND helped her team win a soccer tournament. Watching them all enjoy themselves made for a perfect Mother's Day for me!

Annual May Day Party.....

Yesterday I attended a friend's annual May Day party. She has a beautiful back yard, and is the most wonderful hostess. Unfortunately, it was unseasonably cold. I knew just how cold it was beforehand, because I had been sitting in sleeting rain for two hours prior to the party, watching my sweet 5th grader play baseball (2nd place in the tourney by the way! A huge accomplishment for this young team who has just been moved up a division! We are so proud of our baseball boys!!!). Anyway.... I left the freezing game to head to the garden (or rather, to sip champagne in her equally beautiful home!) Each guest brings a May basket, and then there is a fun exchange! What a nice way to kick off the month of Our Mother Mary!!!! I will get to go to school at the end of the week, and watch our 2nd grade class honor Mary again, in the May Crowning! Then! to top off the week of May perfection? My oldest daughter becomes a teenager on Friday!

The larger picture is the basket I took to the party. I am only including a tiny pic of me. Full size, and you would see for yourself just how long I had been sitting in the sleeting rain. I can only do so much with a hairbrush and a pencil skirt!

A few OOTD's from the past week. I'd say my favorite has got to be where I am 'rocking the casbah'! Yes! That is the new casbah scarf from J Crew! Aren't those colors gorgeous??? I took my daughter and a few friends to the Capital, where they got to be pages for our state Representative. So I had to look like I fit in at the statehouse..... hence the darling tweed jacket! Honestly? It's the end of the school year, and we don't know if we are coming or going at the chic chauffeur's house. So I have no idea what I was doing in the other two outfits. That madras shirt is from last summer, and I bought the pants that matched it as well. Someday, I will get a wild hair, and wear them together (ha! Please. No riots. Just kidding)

Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend, weekend....

Today we have a double header AND the much anticipated 3rd grade lock-in with the Principal. We 'won' this lock-in at our school auction. I am using 'won' loosely, because I am one of the brave volunteers who is staying with the principal (who I adore, and thankfully, is near to me in age. We will be suffering together with a few younger, more energetic moms). So I paid hundreds for the privilege of sleeping in the stinky youth room, on an air mattress with 40 3rd grade girls. Truly, for the amount of fun my daughter will get out of it? It really is as priceless as they described it in the auction. I will just have to suck it up!

So sorry for the lack of posts lately. I have been reading the blogs like crazy, but just no chance to update my own. The chauffeur family has been busy. We've had track meets (and set new school records, thank you very much!), soccer games and baseball games. I have seen my sweet 5th grader hit by the baseball, sure his wrist was broke. Thank you Guardian Angel! My sophomore tried his hand at the high jump, and broke his nose. Thank you Guardian Angel that it was only his nose!!! My 3rd grader is home sick with me today. {she is fairly perky for an 'allegedly' sick student!}. Had an incident with my 7th grade daughter where a young man in her class STOOD ON A DESK AND UNZIPPED AND ZIPPED HIS PANTS. Please note by my all caps that I am very disturbed by this incident. We are a religious school. He is 13 years old. His punishment? One half a day in-school suspension. I am in complete disbelief on this one. First of all, if one of our sons ever pulled a shenanigan like that in the classroom, he would be apologizing personally to every young lady in the class, ASAP. Second, he would not have been at the track meet that next day as this young man was. All I can say about that is this: He is in my crosshairs now. Every false move he makes? I am like a cheap suit, all over this young man and his rotten behavior! {It probably goes without saying, but this is by no means his first, second, or thirty-eth time in trouble this year. His antics make it impossible for the rest of the class to be able to fully immerse in their studies}.
Can you tell I have had a long week?

Even so, I managed to snap a couple of OOTD pics. I was also filming a commercial for our Four Seasons Sunroom business, and as soon as it is ready, I'll let you all have a preview!

I only mean that I am an email writing machine when it comes to every time this boy mutters another sexual innuendo anywhere near my daughter. AND my husband will be paying his parents a visit the next time we have an issue!

I had a little accident at the gym this morning. Not sure if you can tell, but one ankle is much larger than the other. I jumped off the elliptical, and did not move when the foot thingie came swinging back. It slammed into my ankle sooooo hard. It was all I could do not to collapse into tears right there. I managed to limp away with a little dignity, but once I got to the car.... boo hoo!

To add insult to injury? I had to work today at my retail gig. Just what I wanted to do..... stand on my feet for 4 or 5 hours. Ugh! It did give me an excuse to dress casual, and I wore my favorite new chinos.....

In other exciting news.... my oldest daughters volleyball season is over. It ended with a whimper instead of the bang we were hoping for, but it was a great season overall, and she learned a lot about her game this season. We are full force now in soccer, track, baseball and softball for the various kids, and I am excited about watching some outdoor sports!

That said, we are still experiencing typical midwest weather. Yesterday, it hailed like nothing I have ever seen before. I half heartedly wish I had backed my car out of the garage..... Many neighbors will be sporting shiny new roofs soon, courtesy of mother nature and the insurance company. I think we got by without any major damage, but will let the adjustor tell us for sure. Our baseball 'season opener' is tonight, and you'd think we were the Royals. Opening Day weather is just like the pros get: I'll be sitting at a 5th grade baseball game from 8-10 pm, in 35 degrees..... This is where I offer up a prayer of thanks to whoever invented Uggs and sleeping bags!

Today is opening day for the Kansas City Royals. Unfortunately for them, it seems to always be raining on their big day. You can kind of count on it. That and Easter. Never fails.

Speaking of Easter, I have our matchy matchy outfits planned (navy and khaki, with a hit of chartreuse for the gals) and our brunch reservations made. Our kids give me major grief for my insistence that we all match on Easter, but they love me, so they go along with me. And to show them I am not unreasonable? It has been years since I forced them into my beloved pink/green combo! I have stayed with some pretty neutral looks, relying on the old faithful Navy to pull us together. ps.... That's the J Crew #2 pencil skirt in double serge cotton, in citron. I'm wearing my normal size (although sometimes I go up one, and over to petities. I liked the length of this in regular...) It is sold out right now on-line. Who knows whether that will stick? Keep checking if you love it. I am positive you could find it at a brick and mortar store! The shoes are the juliennes (also from JC). If you see them, they are on sale for a crazy low amount!

Lady Lace Popover, how I love you.....

Oh wow! This is my all time favorite. The lace layer is over a fairly sturdy layer of chiffon. The lace overlay felt like it would hold up pretty well. I think this one will go the distance. I took advantage of a promo, but I think it might even be worth a full price purchase (and I never ever say that!). I got a small in this beauty. I did not want a snug fit across the chest, so that size was perfect. For comparison, I wear a 4 in the perfect shirts, and a 2 in most of the camis.... If you want more personal deets (I'm laughing....) you'll have to email me, and I'll be happy to describe my size in excrutiatingly clear detail! I will say that this sweater is a bit shorter than some of my other J Crew sweaters. I really like where it hit, but that might be a problem for one of you taller cuties!

Elizabeth Taylor really was the most beautiful woman in the world

I'm not sure if I think that because in my mind, she looked a bit like my mom (who, really? to me is the most beautiful woman) or because my mother thought Elizabeth was so drop dead gorgeous. Here are pics of the two of them:

It might just have been the hairstyle of the era? Anyway, she was an incredible woman. Definitely lived life largely, but was a true humanitarian.

Buzzfeed did a nice post of the 100 most beautiful pictures of Elizabeth Taylor, and they were all stunning. I could look at her forever! Here are two of my favorite:

ps. That cleopatra pic? Likely inspired my mothers purchase of a Whiting & Davis Tri-Coil Gold Mesh Bracelet. I do not ever recall her wearing it, but after she passed away, I found it in her costume jewelry and snatched it right up (uh oh! Ames, you can have it if you want!!!). Here is an Ebay listing for a similar bracelet: Click me! I don't wear this bracelet often.... It's kind of hard to pull off, especially when you are wearing solid J Crew. But when I do? I feel exactly like the Queen of Egypt, or at least Elizabeth's version of her!

Actually just ripples!

It is the ripple stripe skirt, and is on promo for $88...... If you are looking for a summer 'wear every-where' skirt, this baby is it! It is lightweight, yet lined. Neutral, yet patterned. Patterned, but not too busy. Are you starting to get the drift? If you don't adore the neutral black/white combo, it also comes in a really cute orange (oops sorry, I meant to say cerise) color!

loveth! I wore this outfit to a sad occasion, the funeral of a dear friend's brother. But it can go happy too. I can totally picture myself lunching in this, working in this, or strolling down the streets of Paris in this (I can especially see myself strolling down the streets of Paris! If only the Mr. would picture me doing that!) Of note.... although I took my usual pencil skirt size in this beauty, if you are the slightest bit on the fence, size-wise? I would size up one. For comparison, it is def. a snugger cut than the double serge pencil skirts from J Crew.

ps. Those super cute shoes are the crosby lace up peep toe shoes. They are on clearance HERE. They are very very comfortable, and kind of have a men's brogue look to them, but still feminine with the high heels!

Princess Diana and I

I am a bit of an anglophile.... I have always adored things about the English Monarchy. I was terribly interested in Princess Diana's wedding, and along with a nation, heartbroken after her death. So when 'Diana, A Celebration' (an Exhibition detailing her life) came through town, I couldn't wait to attend. My sweet 7th grader went with me!

The award winning exhibit, 'Diana, A Celebration,' makes it's final stop at Kansas City's Union Station before being returned to the Spencer family home, Althorp Estate. The collection features more than 150 pieces and personal items belonging to Diana, Princess of Wales and throughout the nine exhibit galleries you'll find not only the Royal wedding gown and infamous train, but tiaras and the family jewels, heirlooms, photos and 28 designer dresses. Her wedding dress is said to be the most photographed in history.

Proceeds from the exhibit support the Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, which continues the Princesses' humanitarian work.

Yes! I saw Princess Diana's wedding dress. It was just as beautiful in person as it was on the telly, where I stayed up all night to watch. We also saw things like her diary from school, home movies that her father had made, and loads of dresses that she had worn to different events. (Each dress included a write-up about the designer, and then a life size photo of her wearing it. I loved that part, and my daughter was horrified by the 80's fashion.)

Not nearly as glamorous.... but here I am, outside the exhibit. They were quite strict with the no camera rule inside!

(those are the oxford scout chinos in the new color orchid blue, which is on mark down, and I recycled last years madras shirt!)

And yes, my daughter and I are already planning on staying up to watch her son marry the beautiful Kate Middleton!

We went to the KC Parade today. It was the 38th year for the parade, and is one of the largest in the country. So, we woke up today, on our SPRING break, and there was snow on the ground. Actually, quite a bit of snow on the ground. What's up with that???? Honestly, it put Chic here in a bit of a bad mood. It is supposed to be almost Spring. I'm not expecting 72 degrees (like they are forecasting for St. Patrick's day....), but I'd like to see a little dead grass and sunshine. Is that too much to ask? We have soccer and baseball practices that need to happen. Oh wait. They will happen anyway. The kids will just freeze their you-know-whatees off.

Sigh.

This darling skirt is on sale. (It seems to fit true to size. I am wearing the same size that I take in the double serge pencils) What makes it so great is that it looks awesome now, paired as I have it, or with a fun navy sweater (hello Tory Burch knock-off!), but will also look great in the fall, paired with a warmer sweater (perfect for the rimini sweater I wore here!)

So that's my CHEAP THRILL for today. An all season pencil skirt, for less than $70.

BUZZ KILL: That I did not blog about this skirt last week, while there would have been an additional 30% off the sale price. Although we know how fabulous it is, it does not appear to be flying off the shelves, and might get another markdown. Just depends whether you want to play roulette??

I have found you a less expensive substitute (the J Crew version is still my fave!): Actually, The Budget Babe did. She just did a post on H&M (click here), and lo and behold! A beautiful khaki blazer for only $34.99! If you are near an H&M, I'd hustle right over!

BUZZ KILL? For those of us who don't have an H&M near us, it's a bummer. I wish they had an on-line store!

Spring Forward.....

Finally. Daylight Savings Time is here...... I don't even mind losing an hours sleep, if it means that our days can be a little longer! We are beginning Spring Break (the homegrown 'stay-cation' type) and took today to run errands, return a few fashion mistakes to their rightful retail homes, and pick up things we MUST HAVE for Easter...

We don't have a lot of excitement planned for the break. At the end of it, our oldest turns 16, so we will no doubt celebrate like crazy with him. Other than that, we'll just visit the indoor pool at the gym, and pretend that the concrete around it is a sandy beach! In all honesty, I don't mind staying home. It is just too much to plan for, execute, and then recover from a fabulous vacation in a short week. We'll just wait and take our holiday the old fashioned way, in the summer-time!

Here's what I wore to run around in today. So glad to finally be wearing ankle pants that don't need to be tucked into a pair of Uggs!

I bought the duette cami, which is in final sale right now. It is $79.99, less 30% off. I loved this cami from hello! I adore layering, and this top had layers already built in. WOOT! (sizing info: I took my usual size 2 in this. I wear a 4 in the perfect fit woven shirts, but usually take a 2 in the camis....) Here is how I intend to wear it:

I tried to pair it with things I already had, in the spirit of 30 for 30. Reuse, reuse, reuse! And please excuse my very tired face. Attended Ash Wednesday services very early this morning, and I'm afraid that early wake-up call is catching up to me. I wanted to post this though, before the extra 30% went away, so I'm sacrificing my vanity for your savings!! On the website, they style this top untucked. I liked the bottom layer tucked in, and the top layer left vest-like. That last picture? I totally know that it is layer overload. I just was too lazy to remove the cerise (snort - ORANGE) Jackie, and it did kind of match...... {that's the Liberty Floral Daze cardi in the first pic, and the Rose Vines Blazer in the last one. Both are from last summer!}

So Lent has begun! I enjoy the 40 days of reflection, and try to remember that it is a time to simplify a bit, and remember what is important in life!

Happy Mardi Gras! Love this crazy day before we begin the season of Lent.

Had a candy bar at home for my kiddos as their after school snack (yay! totally unhealthy!!!) and have our King Cake ready to go for dessert tonight. We are eating burgers, macaroni and fries, so the good times are definitely rolling here at the Chic Chauffeur's!

It was still cold outside today (and rainy. sigh.), so I rolled out the Frye's and the Marled Thandie Blazer.... That is a new tee peeking through though, the Luxe Baseball Tee. I love a fun grey tee, and I also LOVE ME SOME BASEBALL, especially when a certain 5th grader is swingin' the bat!

CHEAP THRILL: It won't cost you anything to make a Lenten resolution! When you give up something, or do a little something extra, every time you think about what you are doing? say a little prayer in thanksgiving for all that Easter promises! Totally Free!

BUZZ KILL: I haven't read one crazy thing about Charlie Sheen today, and I have to quit reading Perez at midnight. I wish Charlie would do something -anything - before midnight, so that I can get that final fix in.

Here is my OOTD, if you are looking for inspiration on the J Crew final sale....

The arrow sweater and the checked shirt were there this morning, but gone this evening. I'm sure they will turn up again. The pants are the new cafe capri.... Cute green color, huh? It was pretty cold, and I was glad to have that thick sweater to keep me warm! Curse you snow-mizer. Didn't you get the memo from the groundhog?????

Trying to decide on a Lenten Resolution..... giving up shopping is so obvious, but I just was on a 30 day ban, so it kind of seems redundant. I hate giving up certain foods, because then I am turning Lent into a diet. Does anyone have any Lenten ritual that really made a difference to them? I'd like to do something that affects our family, as well as something that personally is difficult for me to do. Maybe no starbucks? I do love the comfort of a coffee as I drive around town.... It's just that I don't think it would be hard for me to do without.. My current favorite is: stay away from Perez Hilton. Reading all that Hollywood junk definitely does not make me a better person, and certainly takes time I could be spending with the fam. Share your thoughts! I'd love to hear your Lenten Resolutions!

If you simply adore the Gingham Mini, but don't adore it $69.50 worth, it is only $19.99 in-stores! Woot! Cheap thrill on the price, but buzz kill that there are two different price points to keep track of. I bought this, but it is for my daughter, not me. The length was a little short on me, but perfect for someone, say.... under the age of 45. Plus, I think I may be on gingham over-dose right now. I looked at it, and a little voice in my head said "chic....step away from the gingham...."

A few days ago, I said 'bring it' to Spring with the Watercolor Floral Potpourri Scarf (cotton candy color) from J Crew. I love that scarf, and so did a few of you. It's long gone, though, and really, the colors in it are so perfect still this season...

Guess what? I found a lookalike for you! Check out this scarf, from Ann Taylor Loft. It is not on-line, but I saw it in store yesterday, marked still for full price of $34.

What do you think? Not an exact match, but pretty darn close, no? Here is the post where I was posing with my scarf, and here is a post from Gigi's archives, where she discusses it as well..... I think this scarf was definitely worth what I paid for it, which if memory serves me, was full price (yikes!). I think the ATL one is a decent price.....

I prefer a classic look, but every now and then, I like to rebel a little, and throw some crazy punk in (ha). Here I am in a studded sweater that J Crew is practically giving away:

For you shoe lovers out there, the Julienne pump that I am sporting in the first picture? On sale for $69.99. Crazy, huh? They fit true to size, and are very very comfortable. {not as high as the platforms I have been all over lately, but still a nice heel. Very lady-like, and I thought a nice offset to those punk rock studs :) }
CHEAP THRILL: This would be a toss up. That Cotton Stud sweater is on sale in stores (not on-line... for some crazy reason it is full price still, less the special 20% off sweater special) for only $39.99. It is regularly $110. I actually bought the above for a gift, and then ended up giving the recipient something else. Couldn't part with that beauty!. But the shoes are a steal too. So today's cheap thrill is a double dipper!

BUZZ KILL: My greed, I suppose. But to be fair, I left J Crew, and walked into the Loft, and found something that I thought the person I was shopping for would like much better. I actually ended up spending more on her. And the sweater was so nice, and already in my possession, so I just kept it!

This weekend couldn't have come at better time! I was really getting tired of those weekdays! Saturday, I love you! I woke up super early for an appearance (is it technically an appearance if it is radio?) on a radio show, promoting our Four Seasons Sunrooms! Toby Tobin is a local Lawn and Garden expert.... really an expert at everything, and he is very kind to include me now and then on his program! Loads of fun chatting with him and the other guests, and there is always great food! Today was a cake to die for, and the very best Rice Crispy Treats I have ever had (apparently European butter is the secret?). We are off now to a CYO basketball game (competing for 3rd place bragging rights. Go Cardinals!), and then dinner with our extended family. Couldn't be better!!!

Anyway, here is my outfit of the day from yesterday:

Yes, I love that blazer. Yes, I am going to wear it within an inch of it's life. Just get used to seeing it! It's the schoolboy blazer, and as far as I can tell, in stores only right now....

Look closely at those rocking shoes! They are on sale right now for only $99! The Odeon High Heeled Oxfords. I must be the only person on the planet who has seen them in person, and realizes what a gem they are. Snatch them up ladies! They will be great all spring! I wore them all day yesterday, and my feet felt great! I normally take a 6.5, which is what I bought them in. They are a snug fit, but since they are suede, I expect a bit of a stretch, and wouldn't want to have sized up! Here's a close up of my new shoe love:

This is actually a post about segueing your winter clothes into spring! Note how I sneakily made my winter sweater (how I love you, rimini cardi) and paired it with last years spring scarf, to make it look as though I was fresh as a daisy! (um, make that tulip since it is spring...):

Still a total amateur when it comes to photo shop, but I think you get the idea! {and you might also realize, from the looks of those shoes, that I DID IN FACT cheat, and make a purchase. They were $12 for crying out loud!}

Here's another pic, of me and the Mr., all gussied up and ready to go spend money at our kids' schools benefit auction! Don't worry! We raised our paddles high!

That fancy dress? It's a Halston.... But don't worry, I didn't break the bank... I got it at Rent The Runaway, which is a fun site that lets you borrow the perfect evening gown. That cute number, combined with a coupon code, set me back $35. On Sunday, when Cinderella turned back into a housemaid (err, mother), I threw the dress in a postage paid bag, and sent it on its way. They were even kind enough to send me a second size for free, in case I did not guess the fit correctly! Love it!

Wardrobe Essentials....

Today on Gilt Group (which is an on-line sale site.... Click HERE for an invite) they are advertising 'wardrobe essentials' (what inspired this post.... )

The 30 for 30 experiment is drawing to a close. I have learned a lot about what I would consider my signature style, and what for me are 'Wardrobe Essentials'. (Hmmm. This post is kind of a shameless knock off of my friend's new blog Optional Essentials.... In my defense, he IS doing menswear!!!) I've learned about things I could probably do without, and things that are just plain fun to have.

Here are my personal essentials (completely subject to whimsical and arbitrary change based upon my moods, mind you!) are as follows:

a few pair of jeans. One sort of dressy, one loose and holey.

a few blazers. I love blazers. I wear them as jackets, or as sweaters. I like to mix them up, sometimes with dressy clothes, sometimes with a pair of sweats. I HEART blazers. (coincidentally? that is the name of my daughters volleyball team! The Blazers! woot!)

cardigans. Here there is a tiny problem. I DO have too many. How many cardigans are essential? I'm not sure. I'd say get a few in fun colors, and use your blazers as the black and tan colored cardis.... (sigh... if only I practiced what I preached. But seriously? I never wear my black jackie cardi. I always go to a blazer instead.)

camis. hmmmm. I love camis.. For me, a pink, a black and a navy to use as a neutral. I tend to wear camis more than tee shirts, so I have quite a few. If you are working in an office, they are a great layering piece. I think the important thing to remember is not to spend a lot of money on really funky unusual ones that you can only wear for special occasions! Cost per wear, people.... cost per wear! I have a darling gold cami that set me back a fortune. Do I love it? YES! But since I have only worn it twice, it cost me $45 each time I wore it, which really was not such a smart purchase! (I did look super cute both times!!) Two weeks after I got it? It was marked down to $39.99. Curses!

Button-up shirts. OH HOLLA! If you have been reading at all, you know you need a chambray shirt! Really, if you only had that you'd be good. But remember, I am operating as mainly a stay-at-home, part-time worker. If you are a full-time worker, maybe these would be an awesome way to build your wardrobe. Gingham, solid, plaid.... so many to choose from, and so many ways to wear them! Love them with the sleeves rolled up, and shorts, love them tucked into a pencil skirt. They look as great with jeans and a blazer as over a tank top, tied at the waist! Whatever you do, just buy a chambray one, OK????

Pants. This is tough. For me, a pair of chinos and a pair of dress black slacks would probably be enough. Honestly. Do I have more? Yes. ridiculous. But could I get by quite stylishly with just a couple pair? absolutely. I adore the J Crew minnies, and have just about every color they come in, as well as the scout chinos (forgive me Father, for I have been gluttonous!). For what it's worth, both are season-less. But if you are working, you probably need something besides ankle pants. Plus, many of you might be taller than 5'2'', so maybe cropped pants aren't your best option. For shrimpy me? I love 'em!

Tee Shirts. I don't wear many tees. I tend to go the cami route... Even in the summer, I just roll up the sleeves of my woven button-ups. That said, tees can be dressed up or down, and are an easy piece. Just be careful not to spend too much on them, unless you are going to wash them carefully, and hang them dry. Because you know what? A 50$ tee is only going to last as long as the $8 tee you bought at wal-mart. Do not try to convince yourself that based on it's crazy price, it's quality will prevent it from shrinking, or pilling, or twisting at the seams, or getting stains under the arms. It won't. It's a tee shirt. Don't spend a lot of money of them. DO wear them with a blazer, or a pencil skirt. So cute! Just don't get sucked into the $50 tee trap! not.worth.it.

Skirts. Oh pencil skirts, how I love you. But one or two will suffice. And then a fun skirt to wear as a dressier alternative to jeans!

Shoes. I really should just skip this category. I have no business advising anyone on shoe purchases. BUT. Personally, I cannot live without: uggs, ballet flats, kick ass pumps (sorry. that is what they are called.), summer flip flops, sperrys and a pair of dressy sandals for when I am going to the Oscars! Did you notice I did not mention gym shoes???? ha! I guess you can throw in a pair of shoes to work out in, if you must.

I will spend a lot of money on a quality pencil skirt, a nice blazer, and a pair of K.A. pumps... But beyond that, I think you need to keep in mind that styles come and go... No need to break the bank on a button-up gingham shirt, or a gold cami (ugh!). Definitely a case of 'do what I say, not what I do', but choose and spend wisely. Everything goes on sale eventually, and you probably don't need that 'to-die' for item this very second. I speak from experience! Even if it drives the sales girl mad, have them hold something overnight for you, so that you can be sure it's what you want! When I am in the fitting room, looking all cute, I WANT IT ALL!

OK..... that's it for my style ramble! Let's all go through our closets not that the 30 for 30 is almost over, and donate some of those extras to a worthy charity! Too many choices just make getting dressed that much harder!

FULL DISCLOSURE: As I type this, I am in holey jeans, my oldest son's school hoodie, no make-up, doing laundry and getting ready to take my youngest son to basketball. None of the items I am wearing at this moment (except my Uggs) are in my 30 for 30. I did brush my teeth, but not my hair. We were out of coffee, so I had to go to Scooters, where they gave me a free shot of espresso in my latte (did I look like I needed it?). Sometimes you just have to let it go.

I am a human garbage disposal.. If one of my kids leaves it on their plate, guess where it goes? Down the hatch! Maybe all those years of my mom saying....there are starving children in China (which, technically.... why didn't she say a nation that actually had starving children? With my mom, it was always China where people were starving. Hello? Africa?????? Or the Appalachian Mountains.... I think in China, they eat rather well. Yucky food, yes, but for the most part, children are able to eat their fill of nasty roots and veggies).

If I have any sort of special event to attend, and need to get a pedicure, my youngest daughter will be home sick.

If I have workers scheduled to install and refinish wood floors in my house? my youngest daughter will be home sick... and complain the entire time about the smell.

In the whole scheme of things, life is good here at the chauffeurs's house. But honestly, if I finish one more bowl of cereal that should be thrown in the garbage, or I hear one more child complain that our house smells? I.WILL.SCREAM.

Ok. Here is my OOTD. It's a small picture, because I think it's extremely unflattering! But I wanted you all to see my pretty floors!

I think people are a little afraid of that orange jackie (J Crew is calling it cerise, but sorry, it's orange....) I love it! It looks so great with almost any color, but my favorite has to be pairing it with Navy. I'd show you, but some non-forward thinking fashionista did not include any navy items in her 30 for 30 picks. Check with me next week, and I will rock this cerise jackie like nobody's business!!!

CHEAP THRILL FOR TODAY? I am still jonesing for the chambray shirts, and noticed that J Crew factory had one for sale. Me likey! But you have to hurry.... the factory only stays open through Sunday!

BUZZ KILL? Hmmmm... Could be me eating everything in sight, but I'll stay with a fashion theme and say.... the buzz kill for me lately has been the return of high waisted jeans. Those babies need to return to the 70's. Me no likey!!!! Those only look good on tall supermodels.... Short motherly types look like they are wearing, well... mom jeans in them.

I don't have an outfit of the day pic for you, because I have never gotten out of my gym clothes.... But I do have a little bit of a cheap thrill.... If you are ever down in the dumps, go shoe shopping! Generally speaking, your shoe size never changes, and nothing perks up an old dull outfit like a new pair of louboutins (I wish!)...

It's been pretty crazy around here! My sweet 7th grader's volleyball team was in a tournament in Omaha, so the two girls and I went on a road trip! We had a lot of fun together, and their team did great. It was hard to pack within my 30 for 30 guidelines, but I think I made it! Here is what I wore Friday-Monday...

Here is yesterday.... My youngest son was happy to see me (although he admitted that Dad buys WAY BETTER junk food than I do)

And today? It has been a long, horrible day. Our school and church family tragically lost a child. It has been impossible to do anything but imagine the pain and horror his family is going through.

So no energy to take the picture.... I wore my cerise jackie, which is definitely a bright, pick-me-up color. It reminds me of something Tory Burch would wear...

Here's my OOTD for day 17. Love this sparkly cardi, and I have a fun dinner tonight with a friend, so I have a bit of a reason to dress up..

I wanted to thank one of you for a sweet comment. Really, all your comments are sweet! But yesterday 'Addicted to j Crew/Ann Taylor' asked me if anyone had ever told me I looked like Chrissy Evert? I have to tell you what a huge smile that put on my face.... 27 years ago, my first boyfriend in college used to tell me that all the time. He is still a friend of mine (and the Mr.'s).... So I was transported back for a moment to a day when I was a carefree co-ed, without a bazillion lines around her eyes, and 4 kids to look after (and love). Not that I would go back to being that girl, but she was fun to remember for a bit. And that's what I love about blogs..... It's a great friendship with fun new perspectives and ideas from your internet buddies! I have tried recently to comment more when I visit blogs. I always think great comments, but I don't always take the time to type them in. And I am just starting to realize personally how I cherish your comments and input, and want to touch each of you and your blogs in the same way!

CHEAP THRILL: Had my eyebrows done again... Let me tell you, if you are not having your eyebrows professionally waxed? You are missing out. For only $30, I feel like a new woman! Your eyebrows frame your entire face. If you aren't happy with them, run as fast as you can to a fabulous technician (preferably one who uses Anastasia's method!!! My girl is at Nordstrom) and change your life forever!!!!

BUZZ KILL: Eh... it's not exactly buzz kill, but along with the beautiful weather we are having? Road crews are closing lanes on the highway everywhere to fix potholes.... Just seems like it's too early to jump into road construction season!

I don't know what happened to yesterday. I got nothin' for ya! Had a cute outfit, meant to take a pic, and then life got ahold of me. I went to a Chamber meeting, and then another meeting after that. My kids all pitched in while I was running around... between the 4 of them, some of them walked home from school, one of them drove other siblings to practices, and one of them even scored some doughnuts for us for breakfast this morning! That's what I call TEAMWORK!

Today it is a foggy mess. I am not complaining in.the.slightest. I will take fog over 12 inches of snow any day. But the fog is putting me in a funk! It's spaghetti for dinner tonight, which is, in my opinion, the perfect dreary day food!

Here I am, looking all nautical in my striped shirt, chambray button up and black studded pants. If there is one thing I think almost everyone should have at least one of in their closets? I am wearing red to show the love.....

but you probably can't tell it because I have photoshopped that poor photo to within an inch of it's former self.. It's the red and white checked gingham shirt, navy blazer and AE boyfriend jeans. I accidentally cut off my feet, but I'm wearing my funky boots. Love them!

So, my sweet valentines all woke up to little gifts at the breakfast table! So nice to be able to start their day off right.... It was a free dress day at school, which means NO UNIFORMS! So everyone left sporting their own valentine style! I am doing a bit of work on a newsletter for Four Seasons Sunrooms {click away to check it out!} and then need to mop the kitchen floor as a little Valentine to the Mr. (weird, huh, but that is what makes the guy happy....)

if only because it has forced me to try to figure out how to use my cool new camera and photoshop, which I need to use for work, but have been VERY intimidated by.

Here is day 12 and 13.... Wore the cargo pants both days (ewwww) but yes, I did change up the shirt, and pinky swear... I showered. Sequined sweatshirt on Saturday, with sperrys, and the darling Bevan top and a Jackie on Sunday.

Had the oldest son's WPA (women pay all) dance on Saturday night, so busted out my camera for that too. I don't know his date very well, so I am reluctant to plaster her on the internet. She was a doll though! He had a great time! Since he turns 16 in a month, this will be the last big dance that he has to have a parent play chauffeur. Boo Hoo!

Love this jacket! I stalked it to within an inch of it's very last markdown! This is day 11 of the remix... It's the tweed dauphine jacket, the tissue sweatshirt tee in olive (olive you, olive!), my american eagle bf jeans, and those funky boots that I love! Got a bit of bling going on with what might be the duchess necklace and bracelet? I still haven't figured out the delay shoot button on the camera.... It works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't. I think it has something to do with how it is focusing when I press shoot. The manual is dog eared..... I may need to get some real life help!

Here's day 10:

Love the boyfriend sweater.... I really piled on the jewelry, didn't I? Those are two different pearl necklaces; the ever popular pearl twisted hammock necklace, and some other one whose name escapes me. Clearly, for me today? Less was not more. Miss Coco Chanel is somewhere shaking her head right now.

I have historically commented on political scoundrels on this blog. Let's consider for a moment the recent antics of Rep. Chris Lee of New York state. Trolling for women on Craigslist, he sent his new 'email buddy' a pic of himself shirtless and flexing. If that isn't sufficiently gross, he also misrepresented himself as a younger unmarried non-congressman. His potential companion did what any self respecting Craigslist advertiser would do when faced with this type of situation...She sent the entire exchange to a gossip web site. I guess that's the new version of 'calling the wife'.

The Chic Chauffeur finds this biz distasteful...... That nasty man totally disrespected his family, his wife and the people of the state of New York..... Not that I am condoning adultery (double blech) but jeez.....this guy is an elected official. Wouldn't you think he would at least have enough smarts to be discreet if he is going to behave like an ass?

CHEAP THRILL: Starbucks via...Did you know that if you mix a packet of Starbuck's instant coffee with milk (instead of water) it tastes exactly like a latte? So Delish!

BUZZ KILL: Starbucks 'trenta' size. Seriously? 20 ounces of coffee? It would be cold before you get halfway through. it just reeks of supersizy-ness. Please Starbucks, don't turn into McDonalds!

Not sure what is harder..... sticking with my 30 for 30 items, or not shopping. There is a pair of shoes that I have been coveting, that just got marked down.... TORTURE!

So here in the midwest, we got MORE SNOW. *sigh* We don't even bother canceling school anymore. Or plowing the roads, apparently. They were horrible this morning, when I drove my sweeties in. But the field trip, and the swim meet? Canceled. Boo.

I had my car washed yesterday. Funny how a little thing like a clean car can cheer you up. Because let me tell you, a constant temperatures of 5 degrees is starting to get this former lifeguard down. I need SUNSHINE people.

Day 8! Still managing not to cheat, and throw in a black tee. I was surprised that the olive looked so good with the light blue-ish color of the Bevin Blouse. Not to keep carrying on about how much I love the color olive, but I really love the color olive! Olive it! (hee hee). Everyone: go forth and buy olive!

Please try not to fall over laughing at my pose. I am still trying to figure out my camera.... And photoshop.... And life.... I'll let you know when I get any insights!

If you are wondering about that blouse, it definitely runs big (and is on sale right now, in-store). I took a 2, and have plenty of room. It is such a great length. I am going to wear it with my minnies, and pretend I am Audrey Hepburn. I just need a scooter, and I will be all set!

I have a canon rebel EOS 1000D. If you have this camera, and use the self timer, please contact me ASAP. I got this for Christmas (yes.... almost 2 months ago.... and even that simple feature eludes me!). Half of the time, when I clicked to start the timer? Nothing happened..... you'll see....

Here's my outfit of the day:

Number 7 on the remix. And I am very proud of myself! I was tempted to cheat, and pull in a black tee, because I wanted to wear the cute sequin rows silk tee, and wasn't sure about layering olive and grey today (still freeeeezing here)! That is what this re-mix is all about. Getting out of my comfort zone, and trying different things! Turns out, the advice I give people all the time? Olive really is a great neutral. I paired it with something else you'll be seeing in a day or so that I am psyched about too!

Now! As for the little Coach coupon I had? Peggy!!!!!! You get it!!! Although, truthfully? I think you might have been the only person that really wanted it. Email me your address, and I'll send it off tomorrow...

*sigh*. Oh well. If you were cheering for the Packers, congrats! The commercials did bring a smile to my face though.....especially the Doritos ones. I will say, after all the fuss about Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction, they forgot to make a few of those commercials 'family friendly'. I had to cringe, while watching with my 5th grade son, and explain why a guy told his valentine he liked her rack..... *double sigh*

and here's proof! Today I re-mixed my chambray shirt with my merino boyfriend sweater and the cypress plaid skirt. Threw some boots in there for warmth (hello? snow? go ahead and melt any day now. Not like the weatherman is calling for MORE SNOW on Tuesday....).

This remix thing is fun. The only thing I am worried about is the weather. It is so darn cold here, and I didn't mix in any thermals! You may be waiting awhile before you see any of those cute camis.... (or a cheat may occur, and I might have to throw in a long sleeved tee. I just wasn't thinking about sub-zero weather for days and days and days on end!

This skirt was perfect to wear to day one of our Open House! It has an elastic waist, so not only can you pull it down a bit for modesty? It also expands as you snarf cupcakes with your clientele!

Here is my day 4 outfit! I love how my sweater kind of looks like a vest peeking out! I ran some errands and worked from home a bit.

(I'm wearing my american eagle boyfriend jeans, merino sequined crocheted cardi, candy perfect plaid shirt, navy blazer, and funky boots). I have great big earrings on, so I went easy on the rest, and wore my infinity diamond circle, my kids saints medals, and a 'simplicity' necklace a sweet friend gave me. I totally need to keep things more pared down. I am glad for the reminder the necklace gives me.

True confession: I did not wear those shoes today. I wore my uggs. But they looked soooooo good with my outfit, and they are on the JC final sale, for an extra 40% off. I just wanted everyone to get a gander at them, and not miss out on a great buy if they loved them as much as I do! (Lindy platform heels in warm taupe: Regular price = $265. On sale for $149.99 less 40% = 89.99. (thanks Gigi for the reminder..... I took my regular size, 6.5 and these sweet shoes fit perfectly. Although they look a mile high, it's all platform, and they are super comfortable. If the darn snow would ever melt, I would wear them EVERYWHERE!)

Tales from the Shopping Bag....

That title had a grab, huh?

So I have a few shopping stories for you. First, here's what I wore shopping today:

(the lace tee is in final sale, and would only be around $23 if you so covet..... That is an older boyfriend blazer, and some ankle zip cords that frankly? felt too tight)

Had my eyebrows done today by a gal who studied under someone named Anastasia Soare. Apparently Anastasia is famous. All I know is that I went into the chair with scraggly little commas for eyebrows, and I exited the chair a Hollywood star. ok. Maybe not a Hollywood star. But that is how I felt. Since the infamous day in 1975 when Kenny Keleher 'accidentally' tripped me, and I hit my head on a desk and busted a huge gash above my eye, leaving (what feels like) a huge scar running through my left eyebrow, I have felt as though I had hideous eyebrows. Today, at least for now, my eyebrows are normal. So, good day at the brow salon.

Then, because I was at the mall, I moseyed over to the Loft, to see what they could tempt me with. This caught my eye:

I have a strict rule about never buying without a discount of some sort though, and at full price of $49.50, it had to stay at the mall. Aren't those grey and yellow stripes cool? If you are a loft watcher, and see that shirt go on sale, give me a heads up!

What was on sale was just about everything else. I ended up with the metallic croc pencil skirt, which I probably need like a hole in the head. What made this one different was that it had POCKETS (insert heavenly music here, please). Who doesn't love a skirt with pockets?????? I tried to figure out what to do with the skirt in the dressing room, and couldn't decide. Loved the flower belt (ummm, even wore it as a necklace) - but again, it wasn't on sale, so it couldn't come live with me (boo!). The skirt was an extra 50% off, so it was a whopping $12.50. I think it has potential, don't you?

And my last shopping story: this one is the one that gets interesting. I was at Walmart (I know, I know) at 9:30 pm the other day. I watched as an elderly woman methodically took items off the shelves, and placed them in the Walmart bags she was carrying around with her. I was shocked - thinking to myself - Oh no. That lady is really shoplifting. Quick. Look around: No. There are no hidden cameras. This gal is just plain stealing. And she was doing it RIGHT NEXT TO ME. I said to her: Ma'am, do you need me to get you a cart? She said: mumble mumble, can't push a cart, hurt my back, mumble mumble. And then she walked away.

Well. I wasn't letting this one go. She wasn't that elderly. (maybe early 60s). I followed her (at a safe distance, just like Chris Munroe would have done. .....eh - who am I kidding? It was more like Mrs. King from The Scarecrow and Mrs. King....) and witnessed her taking MORE items. MULTIPLE ITEMS. Finally, and mainly because I wanted to get home because it was starting to snow AGAIN, I flagged down a Walmart worker in the meat department, and explained what was happening. He relieved me of my detective duties, and went to get security. After I got home, a friend told me about a recent episode of 'What Would You Do'. She said it was about that very same thing. Actors posed as 'elderly shoplifters' to see if real life people would turn them in. So now we know. I would totally turn them in. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

What a difference a few weeks make. We have been back from sunny Mexico for a short 2 weeks, and it hasn't stopped snowing since we came back. AGHHHHH. Today, we are are on our 3rd snow day in less than 2 weeks. AND we had a holiday thrown in there as well.

So, if you are snowed in? And are sick of making snow ice cream (which by the way, tastes terrible.... I am not even going to post a recipe for it.... although I wlll say, if you are going to make it, use Paula Dean's), send the kids down to the basement to watch movies, and snuggle up with a book or two. Here are a few I read while I was on holiday. I loved them all:

I know. That is A LOT of books. I pretty much just plopped myself in a beach chair and read (when I was not in the spa, indulging myself in massages....). It would be hard to pick a favorite. I love Elizabeth Edwards. I loved her books. However, reading a book by a woman whose life was pretty much defined by losing her 16 year old son in an automobile accident when I myself was leaving my 15 year old son (who drives himself to and from school and work) was not my smartest move. I literally spent the entire vacation in prayer that my son would not be in an accident. Seriously. Almost paralyzed with fear. If you are a mom reading this, I'm sure you can relate. And that kind of sums of motherhood doesn't it? Here is a woman who has terminal cancer, yet still, her life's defining moment is not that, nor is it her husband's horrible betrayal. It is the fact that she lost her child. She was truly a woman of great strength and dignity. Ron Hall's books? You must read them. His friendship with Dallas, a homeless man who grew up sharecropping, is inspiring. Unbroken is sort of a World War II story, but really, the true story of a man whose spirit would not be broken by his Japanese captors. House Rules is a story about a family whose son has autism, and Rescue was just a good read. So there you go! Enjoy!

So back to the snow...... Look at my hottie date! We went to the Snow Ball, a benefit for Catholic Charities..... so much fun for me to dress up and go out ANYWHERE {I'm sure you all relate}, but especially nice knowing that getting my party on also benefited a good cause!

That's the Ikat Bustier dress, and I snapped it up for a song. Love it!

So today is the day we celebrate Martin Luther King's enormous contributions to tolerance and peace. His message is as pertinent today as it was 42 years ago.

A friend of mine blogged about what his message meant to her, focusing on how he called on each of us to speak out when we see injustice:

My favorite quote of his is this:
"History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people."

It goes hand in hand with another quote I love from Edmund Burke:

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

Society will do whatever people will allow. Why are we allowing so much? Why do we stand by and watch? Why are people so afraid to take a stand? And even when they are afraid, why don't they do it anyway? Why ignore injustice, especially little injustices?

"I don't want to get involved," "It's terrible, but it's really none of my business," and my personal favorite (not!), "Wellllllllllll, yes, I know all the bad things they have done, but they didn't do bad stuff to me personally so I cannot stand up against it."

Really?

Pretending that injustice does not exist is as bad as causing the injustice in the first place. There are bullies everywhere, children and adults. I will not accept it and pretend that it does not exist. It's not in me to pretend to be friends to keep the peace. Children who are bullies can be redirected, but sometimes they grow up to be adult bullies. There is no place for adult bullies in my life. I'm not playing that game. And I'm not sorry about that.

My Team G buddy and I discuss this issue frequently. It is the natural tendency of every single person to want to be liked.... It's hard to take a stand against those whose behavior is not OK, especially when those people who are acting so horribly are well liked, or in the 'popular crowd'. An example pops into my head almost immediately: how often have we heard a racist joke told by some drunk in a bar? I have heard plenty. And I am ashamed to say that there have been several times that I heard those nasty comments that I held my tongue, instead of immediately making it clear to everyone around me that I did not approve of nor agree with that type of remark. Or I waited until after that person is done, and then I whispered to my friend, 'how offensive!'. The right thing for me to do is to stop the jokester the minute he begins.

It's not that you need to get in peoples faces every.single.second. Just don't stand by when you see adults behaving badly. Dr. King also said this: 'He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.' And you know what? There are a lot of different kinds of evil.

What a blessing to have a day to reflect about this topic!

Feel compelled to add, regarding yesterday's post..... My Economist friend's wife hastened to let me know, that in matters of fashion, he might not be my 'go-to guy'...... He is spot on for strictly supply/demand topics, but throw in pajama jeans, and I might be better off to use my own judgement! I got a laugh out of that! So, I will stick with my ever-so-humble opinion that pajama jeans have no place in the fashion world, regardless of any (alleged) demand!

Supply and Demand???? Really? Is the free market system working correctly?

I have a friend who is an economist. No, an Economist. I need to run this by him. Apparently there is a DEMAND from American fashionistas for a product called PAJAMA JEANS. So a company actually has manufactured and is SUPPLYING this crime against nature to actual consumers.

........speechless.

I say, if you want to wear pajamas around, because you want a little comfort? WEAR. YOUR. PAJAMAS.

But in a thousand years, you cannot take a pair of sweatpants, throw some rivets on them, say they are 'boot-cut' and use them interchangeably with a pair of jeans.

Came back from sunny Mexico to face a snow storm..... I guess we didn't time our trip right? Although I would have been eaten up with guilt thinking of all the families we had farmed our kids out to, trying to do the 'snow day' routine with extra children. I certainly hadn't packed the snow bibs and all the gear!

So now it's laundry for me! I'll be back tomorrow, hopefully with a post to show off my tan, and with a recommendation for all the books I read, while I was lounging at the beach (spoiler: I love Elizabeth Edwards!)! Someone stage an intervention! Polyvore is like paperdolls to me! I can't step away. Literally.... this is what I am wearing this moment...... These ultra skinny lounge pants are divine. If you happen to need a pair of sweats, run into J Crew and grab a pair. It will be worth the fight! (and it will be a fight. they are v.hard to find!). Stylin' in my alma mater's sweatshirt, and the ring! Of course it is a San Benito ring. The medal of St. Benedict offers it's wearer all sorts of protection. Even if you think it's a bunch of superstitious mumbo jumbo, you would have to admit it is beyond stylish. But to me, St. Benedict is very special, and it's a treasure!

Don't you love a makeover?

I am a huge fan of the ABC show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. There was once even a beneficiary of the show in our city! Very exciting to watch!!! That house was amazing when they finished with it. And the family? A widowed firefighter who was not only providing for his own kids, but had also taken in some kids who needed a home and some love. He was overwhelmed, and this show gave him a chance to get back on his feet, at least on the home-front.

This weeks show features a Four Seasons Sunroom! You know I am beside myself about that...... tune in Jan 2nd, at 7pm central to check it out. Word on the street is that the sunroom is the homeowners' favorite spot of the house!
